Our Menu

Seasons and harvests guide what we serve. Every plate celebrates the Eastern Cape hills and the hands that grow our food.

Starters from the Garden

Begin with the Season

EMaxesibeni Garden Salad

Crisp lettuces, radish, and heirloom tomatoes from our neighbouring farms, dressed with cold-pressed local oil and aged balsamic. Soft goat's cheese from the Drakensberg foothills and toasted seeds.

Roasted Butternut & Sage Bisque

Silken pumpkin soup infused with fresh sage from our garden, a whisper of chilli heat, and finished with nutmeg cream. Served warm with thyme-crusted sourdough.

Charred Beets & Whipped Feta

Slow-roasted golden and beetroot beets, still warm, laid on clouds of whipped feta cheese. Dressed with pomegranate molasses, toasted walnuts, and micro leaves. A sweet, savoury, earthy beginning.

Smoked Trout Crostini

Local river trout, gently smoked over wood, flaked onto warm sourdough points. Topped with crème fraîche, thinly sliced radish, and fresh dill. Delicate, clean, and unmistakably of the Eastern Cape.

Signature Mains

The Heart of Our Table

Slow-Braised Karoo Lamb

Tender lamb shoulder, braised for hours with red wine, juniper, and fresh herbs from Singeni. Served with creamy celeriac purée, seasonal root vegetables, and a glossy pan sauce. Warm, tender, and honest.

Pan-Roasted Eastern Cape Beef Fillet

A generous cut of locally raised beef, seared to a golden crust and finished in the oven. Rested and sliced, plated with roasted baby potatoes, charred broccoli, and a red wine jus. Generous and refined.

Herb-Brined Chicken Supreme

Free-range chicken breast, brined in herbs and lemon, gently roasted until golden. Served with creamed corn from local growers, wild mushrooms sautéed in thyme, and a light pan gravy. Comforting and contemporary.

Saffron & Turmeric-Glazed Line Fish

The day's catch, delicately glazed with golden spice and roasted skin-side down. Accompanied by sautéed baby spinach, roasted fennel, and a citrus beurre blanc. Light, fragrant, and full of character.

Wild Mushroom & Kale Pie

Our vegetarian centrepiece: a buttery, hand-rolled pastry filled with seasonal foraged mushrooms, lacinato kale, caramelised onion, and mountain cheese. Served with roasted root vegetables and a rich mushroom gravy. Earthy and deeply satisfying.

Charcoal-Roasted Baby Vegetables & Halloumi

A feast of the garden: charred seasonal vegetables — baby aubergines, courgettes, baby carrots, spring onions — served alongside thick slices of grilled halloumi cheese. Finished with za'atar, pomegranate, and herb oil. Vibrant and unexpected.

From the Braai & Grill

Smoke & Fire

On warm evenings, our open-flame grill becomes the heart of the patio. We slow-cook over wood and charcoal, letting the Eastern Cape hills flavour every bite.

Whole Grilled Spiced Chicken

A bird butterflied and rubbed with chilli, paprika, and local herbs, grilled whole over charcoal. Smoky, tender, and served with burnt lemon and charred greens. Perfect for sharing or savouring alone.

Grilled Lamb Chops with Mint Oil

Thick-cut ribs from Karoo-raised lamb, seared on the grill until caramelised outside and pink within. Finished with fresh mint oil, lemon, and sea salt. Smoky, succulent, and unmistakably special.

Charred Spring Vegetables & Romesco

Baby leeks, young courgettes, baby aubergines, and spring onions, grilled until charred and tender. Served with romesco sauce — roasted red peppers, almonds, and smoked paprika — and toasted bread. Vibrant and alive.

Braai-Grilled Sosaties

Skewered lamb, chicken, and seasonal vegetables, rubbed with turmeric and grilled over coals in the traditional Cape braai style. Served with chilli and onion compote. A celebration in every bite.

Sweet Endings

Close the Evening Well

Spiced Apple & Almond Crumble

Warm apples from the Eastern Cape valleys, spiced with cinnamon and star anise, baked beneath a buttery crumble of oats and local almonds. Served with creamy vanilla custard and a drizzle of caramel. Comfort in a bowl.

Dark Chocolate Torte with Berry Compote

A rich, flourless chocolate cake from local cacao, dense and elegant. Crowned with whipped dark chocolate cream and a tart compote of seasonal berries. Silky, intense, and perfect for two spoons.

Lemon Posset with Shortbread

A traditional British pudding reimagined: silken cream infused with fresh lemon from the foothills, chilled and poured into a glass. Served with buttery shortbread and candied lemon peel. Light, refreshing, and elegant.

Drinks & Refreshments

Toast to the Moment

South African Wines

A hand-picked selection of wines from across South Africa's finest regions. Crisp whites from the Elgin Valley, elegant reds from Stellenbosch and the Franschhoek Cape, and natural wines that capture the terroir. Ask your host for recommendations by course or taste.

Craft Beers & Local Draught

Rotating selection of craft beers from Eastern Cape and Western Cape breweries. Light lagers, hoppy IPAs, and rich stouts on tap. Perfect with our braai plates or enjoyed on the patio at sunset.

Non-Alcoholic

Pressed fresh juices from seasonal fruit, herbal teas infused from our garden, sparkling water with local botanicals, and rich hot chocolate in cooler months. We honour those who choose not to drink with flavour and care.

A Note on Our Menu

Our menu follows the seasons and the harvests of EMaxesibeni and the surrounding hills. This means what we serve changes through the year — some dishes appear only when ingredients reach their peak, others rest when their time has passed. There is no fixed list; instead, we work with what the Eastern Cape grows best, and what our farmers bring us.

When you visit, ask your host about the day's specials and the stories behind them. If you have dietary requirements, allergies, or preferences, we welcome advance notice when you book your table. We will do our best to create something delicious for you.
